The board approved a project ordinance creating a $3,713,067 public-school building fund to cover repairs and renovations to schools damaged by Hurricane Helene. Finance Director Christian Owen said the ordinance covers the repairs approved under the newly established Hurricane Helene recovery fund and that funds will be issued up front; any later FEMA reimbursements or insurance claims must be repaid to the fund.
Assistant Superintendent Grama Haines thanked local legislators and said the state set aside $50 million for school systems in federally designated disaster areas as part of the 2024 Disaster Recovery Act (Senate Bill 743). Staff described the funding arrangement as enabling immediate repairs without pulling district capital or floating costs while waiting for federal or insurance reimbursements.
Why it matters: The allocation allows repairs of school facilities to proceed quickly after storm damage, reducing disruption to students and preserving capital resources for other uses.
