SDR pledges local subcontractor outreach and workshop; county seeks to maximize local hiring

Southern Disaster Recovery told Haywood County commissioners it plans to hold a contractors'style workshop to engage local firms and brief them on equipment, insurance and site requirements.
"A workshop is something that seems to work well to get the word out," Chip Patterson said, describing the event as the forum to exchange information and identify which local subcontractors have the equipment and experience to support waterway clearance and hauling. Patterson said the company will seek subcontractors with appropriate insurance and familiarity with stream work and noted that many local firms have previously worked on Emergency Watershed Protection projects.
Commissioners repeatedly pressed for local participation; one member noted previous local firms "did an outstanding job" and saved money on prior projects. SDR said it will open the workshop, collect information and then identify which local firms can be used on specific packages, while making sure insurance and environmental requirements are met.
