Palouse Conservation District proposes beaver-dam-analog structures at five Paradise Creek sites

Laura Kirkpatrick, Palouse Conservation District, told the Palouse Trail Committee that the district is proposing beaver dam analog and post-assisted log structures at five sites in Paradise Creek.
"The proposal is for beaver dam analog and post-assisted log structures to be installed at five sites in Paradise Creek," Kirkpatrick said, describing the design as aligned with the Snake River low‑tech restoration plan model. She said the structures are intended to create channel spawning habitat and reduce the force of flow during floods, which in turn would reduce trail damage.
Kirkpatrick described technical and siting details: the structures would be made from natural materials and attached to the bank, installed below the high‑bank mark where bank conditions are suitable; two of the proposed sites are within Pullman city limits and the group identified the cluster of sites as about three miles downstream of the Moscow water treatment plant. She also reported that some environmental and cultural compliance review has been completed to satisfy grant requirements.
The committee did not take a vote on the project at this meeting; members set the Paradise Creek proposal for a decision at the committee's April 14 meeting. Questions the committee may address next include final site selection, permitting needs, and the precise scope and budget for construction.
