Haywood Community College seeks modest budget increase and expands lineman, CDL and public-safety programs

White said spring enrollment rose about 10% year-over-year and that the college seeks a 4.7% operating increase (about $161,650) to cover personnel and operating costs. She announced the workforce outdoor training center is under contract and will host programs including lineman training and CDL truck-driver instruction, and that the college will offer a new public-safety administration associate degree starting fall 2025 to serve law enforcement, EMS and fire professionals.
White also described capital needs and storm-related repair estimates—about $400,000 for an Armory Drive storm-drain collapse and an additional ~ $50,000 in minor campus repairs. The college requested to continue facilities planning to prioritize general-education building renovations or replacements. Commissioners commended the college for program expansion and pandemic-era recovery work.
