Council approves up to $25,000 to mount equipment on new fire engine

Councilwoman Jennifer Jansen moved and Council Pro-Tempore Megan Coy seconded approval of Requisition 26-FIRE-00014, a contract to Sensible Products not to exceed $25,000 to relocate and mount equipment from the current fire engine to a newly delivered unit. The motion carried on a roll call vote, 6-0.
Councilman Brett Iafigliola pressed for better cost forecasting, noting this is the third meeting where additional outfitting items have been brought forward. Finance Director Eileen Egan said the truck is "really pretty but there is no equipment on it, basically it is just a truck," and confirmed there was no equipment contingency set aside in the recently approved budget because the stripped-out vehicle was purchased that way. Iafigliola asked that Interim Fire Chief Randy Kimbro provide a list of other expected items and estimated costs so council can anticipate future requests.
The authorization allows for a not-to-exceed amount; according to the motion text the city may spend less than the $25,000 if final costs are lower. The council record shows the purpose is to avoid returning for piecemeal additional appropriations once outfitting work begins.
