DNR outlines Lake Traverse access upgrades and wetland restoration plans in Traverse County

Representatives from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources gave the Board an annual update. The DNR reported a 2025 Payment in Lieu of Taxes (PILT) to Traverse County of $21,496.15 and said state-managed land within the county totals 375,292 acres, about 0.3% of the county's land base.
DNR officials said they completed a 490-acre tree removal and brush mowing project at Hunter's Paradise Wildlife Management Area and described plans for a wetland restoration project in 2026 to enhance wildlife habitat and increase water storage capacity. The DNR outlined a collaboration with Traverse County to upgrade public access at Lake Traverse, which includes relocating a picnic shelter, constructing a paved parking area with 20 trailer stalls for vehicles towing boats, installing stormwater controls, and establishing an aquatic invasive species management area using Get Out MORE funding. The DNR also said Lake Traverse is co-managed with South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks and that the agency plans to update the Public Water Inventory over the next eight years. DNR representatives said they are coordinating with Riverview Dairy on sustainable water use at existing and proposed sites.
