Traverse County sets preliminary levy at $8.15 million after 4-1 vote

County Auditor/Treasurer Kit Johnson told the Board the county's tentative levy position and options to reduce the increase. Johnson said the county's levy increase currently sat at 16.94% over 2025, but using $515,000 of fund balance would bring a proposed preliminary levy to $8,154,276.16, a 9.99% increase over 2025.
Commissioner Dwight Nelson moved to set the preliminary levy at $8,154,276.16; the motion was seconded by Commissioner Chad Metz and passed on a 4-1 vote, with Commissioner Kayla Schmidt opposed. Johnson noted the final levy must be set by Dec. 29, 2025. The Board scheduled the Truth in Taxation meeting for Dec. 3, 2025, at 6:00 p.m.
