The Amelia County Board of Supervisors voted to approve a special exception permit for a dog kennel on a 101‑acre A‑5 zoned parcel at 24950 West Soapstone Road. Curtis of the Brickley Group summarized staff’s report and recommended conditions including setbacks of 100 feet from front, sides and property lines and compliance with the zoning ordinance standards.
Applicant representatives (Andrew and Ashley Jordan) answered board questions about scale and facilities. Ashley Jordan said the owners currently keep about five personal dogs and do not plan a very large boarding operation: “I know Ashley and I cannot handle a 100 dogs… I think we have 5 dogs on our property.” She said any larger boarding would require different facilities and investment.
No members of the public spoke against the application during the public hearing. After discussion about possible limits and the staff conditions, a supervisor moved to approve and the motion carried.
The conditions approved track the staff report: allowed activities (boarding, training, breeding/sale if applicable), required setbacks, and requirements that structures and fenced areas meet zoning standards. The board did not set a numeric cap on animals beyond enforcement of the zoning standards and the special exception conditions.
What happens next: staff will finalize the permit paperwork and monitor compliance with the conditions; neighbors and the county will have the standard enforcement channels if issues arise.
