Traverse County proposes 6.39% levy increase for 2026; certification tabled until Dec. 16

Auditor/Treasurer Kit Johnson presented the proposed 2026 budget summary to the Traverse County Commission at the Dec. 3 Truth in Taxation hearing and said the proposed levy increase stands at 6.39% over 2025. Johnson also noted the board had previously set a preliminary levy at 9.99%.
After discussion and public comment, commissioners voted to table action on certification of the 2026 budget until Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2025. The motion to table was made by Commissioner Dwight Nelson and seconded by Commissioner Kayla Schmidt; the motion carried 4–0. The board must finalize and certify the levy by Dec. 29, 2025.
