County engineer says highway worker will retire; commission approves recruitment and extends park agreement

County Engineer Chad Gillespie told the Traverse County Commission that longtime highway employee Doug Sykora will retire on February 27, 2026 and requested approval to begin advertising for a replacement, with the option to hire early for training. The board approved the request on a motion by Commissioner Dwight Nelson, seconded by Mark Gail; the vote was recorded as 4–0 after Commissioner Chad Metz lost his connection during the vote.
The board also noted and approved an amendment to the County Park agreement that extends the term to June 30, 2026. Gillespie said remaining highway work items include curb stops, installation of handicap signs, and striping. "Doug Sykora will retire on February 27, 2026, and requested approval to begin advertising to fill the position, with the option to hire earlier for training," the minutes state.
The commission did not attach additional funding details to the recruitment authorization during the meeting. The personnel action and park amendment were recorded on the meeting minutes and will be reflected in upcoming procurement and human-resources steps.
