Traverse County certifies 2026 levy of $8.07 million after 4–1 vote

County Auditor/Treasurer Kit Johnson presented the proposed 2026 levy and related budget details to the Traverse County Commission on Dec. 16, 2025. Commissioner Dwight Nelson moved to certify the levy at $8,072,459.67, representing an 8.89% increase over the 2025 levy; the motion was seconded by Mark Gail and carried 4–1, with Commissioner Kayla Schmidt recorded as opposed.
Johnson also requested approval to transfer $65,000.00 from the Traverse Care Center fund to the Prairieview Place fund to maintain a positive cash balance through May; that transfer was approved unanimously (motion Kayla Schmidt, second Dwight Nelson). Auditor/Treasurer Johnson noted two parcels offered at the Nov. 19 tax sale had sold and one parcel in Browns Valley remained available with local interest. The Board's vote on the levy follows budget discussions earlier in the meeting and sets the county’s tax certification for 2026.
