VDOT outlines upcoming closures, detours and RCUT plan at high-traffic intersection

A VDOT representative updated the board on local road projects and traffic-control plans, saying crews have completed the Route 46 bridge work and are wrapping contract resurfacing for the season. On Route 723 the contractor plans a closure "sometime week after next. July 7th to 9th, we'll see that closure," and the detour is expected to last "about 30 days, more or less, depending on the contractor," with signed routing through town.
VDOT staff described the RCUT design for the intersection at 723: northbound traffic wishing to cross or go west will be directed to turn right, then use a new crossover and U-turn sequence that removes the unprotected left-turn movement across four lanes. Board members raised speed and enforcement concerns during construction; VDOT recommended coordination with state police and noted that changing posted speed limits in temporary work zones requires a formal speed study and higher-level approvals.
