County begins landslide mapping, encourages owners to report slope damage

County staff said Development Services is partnering with Appalachian Landslide Consultants to survey and document landslides created or revealed by recent storms so those findings can be included in mitigation planning. "If you have a landslide on your property, you think we've not been to it to evaluate it, call development services," the recovery official said, naming Tim Sisk (erosion control) as the staff contact.
Commissioners and staff noted that landslide damage is generally not covered by standard homeowners insurance and that gathering geotechnical and mapping data is an early step in seeking mitigation grants or technical assistance. The county said it is compiling assessments to submit to state mitigation programs.
