County staff: FEMA hotel extensions, state trailers and Feb. 6 deadline for Helene survivors

Haywood County’s recovery lead told commissioners that federal and state relief programs for Hurricane Helene survivors are ongoing and that the state has ordered travel trailers to provide temporary housing for people rebuilding on their own lots. “We had the 1st week this program was rolled out under governor Stein, we had 7 in the county who applied, and 6 of those are now getting these homes,” Assistant County Manager for Recovery and Resiliency Darren Bridal said.
Bridal said FEMA representatives began contacting Helene survivors staying in FEMA-funded hotel rooms to reassess continued eligibility and that those who are found ineligible will now have three weeks to leave once contacted; he also said the FEMA deadline for applying for individual assistance or requesting public assistance is Feb. 6. Bridal encouraged residents interested in the Helene mitigation program to contact Cody Grama at (828) 476-0285 or mitigation@haywoodcountync.gov and said 35 applicants had entered mitigation with another roughly 40 people expressing interest.
