Citizen urges county to pursue KSU grant for a local public cannery; commissioners offer general support

Norm Oeding presented a proposal asking the commission to consider applying for a Kansas State University or Food & Farm Council grant to establish a local public cannery. Oeding said a public cannery could create sustainable jobs, improve food security and provide educational opportunities, and recommended promoting small-farm and backyard chicken flocks in the community as a complementary initiative.
Assistant County Administrator Shannon Kingsley told commissioners she had spoken with KSU Extension Agent Anne Pitts, who indicated KSU may have grant opportunities or resources through the Food & Farm Council. Commissioners said they generally support the project but suggested another agency or an individual should take lead on grant-seeking and application work rather than the county taking primary responsibility.
