Commissioners table sale of surplus Road & Bridge, Noxious Weed equipment after legal concerns

Jim Meier, Road & Bridge Superintendent, and Rex Yohn, Noxious Weed Director, presented Resolution 2025-31 asking the commission to authorize online sale of surplus county equipment, including a 2005 Trail King tilt-top trailer, a 2009 Rhino 15-foot mower, a Kawasaki Mule 610 ATV 4x4, three Honda horizontal shaft motors and a Kohler horizontal shaft motor with pump. The departments proposed using AgriVision Auctions, which would direct a 7% commission to a local neighborhood-renewal project spearheaded by The Gathering Church.
Commissioner Becky Reimer questioned whether AgriVision would attract as many bidders as Purple Wave and moved to use Purple Wave instead; the motion was not seconded. An AgriVision representative told the board that "most online equipment auction sites, including AgriVision and Purple Wave, use the Auction Time platform to expand their audience," and said bids should be similar across platforms. County Counselor Brad Jantz advised caution, saying the county should review legal issues about providing funds to a religious organization or otherwise benefiting a single non‑county project. Following that guidance, Becky Reimer moved to table the discussion until next week; Don Schroeder seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
The commission did not adopt Resolution 2025-31 at this meeting; staff were directed to research legal questions and return with guidance. The presentation and background materials (Resolution 2025-31 and an Online Auction flyer) were entered into the record.
