Traverse County backs $1.5 million LRIP grant application for two Browns Valley roads

On Nov. 18, 2025, the Traverse County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a resolution supporting a Local Road Improvement Program (LRIP) application for SAP 078-604-026 (MCSAH 4) and SAP 078-706-003 (MCSAH 106) in Browns Valley. Highway Department Engineer Chad Gillespie presented the resolution and requested the board's approval.

Gillespie said the projects are planned for construction in 2028 at a planning-level construction cost estimate of $2.06 million and that "Traverse County will be applying for $1.5 million in LRIP funding for eligible elements," with MCSAH construction funds covering remaining costs. The resolution text read in the meeting states, "The Traverse County Board of Commissioners supports the Local Road Improvement Program application for Grant Funds to improve these sections of road." The projects are described in the resolution as Major Collector connections to Mn St Hwy 28 that provide farm-to-market access, congestion relief, and benefit to local businesses and emergency services.

Board members emphasized safety and local economic benefit; the resolution notes planned elements to eliminate hazards intended to reduce traffic crashes, deaths, injuries and property damage. Commissioner Mark Gail moved to adopt the resolution; Commissioner Chad Metz seconded the motion and it passed unanimously.

The board did not adopt a detailed construction contract at the meeting; Gillespie indicated funding would be a mix of LRIP and MCSAH construction funds and that more detailed engineering and bidding will occur before the 2028 construction schedule.
