Board approves $62,500 to keep Nottoway County Emergency Squad running through June

The Nottoway County Board of Supervisors voted to reappropriate $62,500 to the Nottoway County Emergency Squad to help the volunteer service meet payroll and sustain an additional squad shift beginning June 1.

Logan Presley, the county's financial manager, told the board the squad requested roughly 0.083 of next year’s planned allocation "which is about $62,500 in June" to cover immediate payroll needs. Nottoway County Emergency Squad representative David Williams described heavy call volumes and a continuing effort to recruit qualified advanced EMTs and paramedics; he said the squad sometimes runs only one ambulance and routinely relies on mutual‑aid partners during high‑demand periods.

Board members questioned operational details, staffing levels and whether the squad could sustain a second 24/7 ambulance permanently; supervisors said they expect the advisory board work and follow‑up reports to inform the FY26 budget. A motion to reappropriate the funds was moved, seconded and approved; county staff indicated a check would be available June 2 to cover the June payroll request.

The board also agreed to continue discussions about forming an advisory/executive board for emergency services, recruitment incentives and possible volunteer incentives in follow‑up meetings.
