Chief Ryan Hanson told the council the city was awarded a $125,000 COPS Hiring grant intended to support the creation of a seventh position in the department to help reduce part-time hours, cover vacations and replace an officer expected to retire. Hanson said the grant provides three years of support with the city assuming a larger share each successive year and full cost in year four.
Council member Jim Kreemer moved to accept and submit the required paperwork for the grant by the Oct. 31 deadline; the motion carried unanimously. City staff noted the hiring would require tracking funding obligations so the city can budget for the increasing local share in future years.
