Commissioners press consultants on erosion and stormwater solutions for Dracaena Ravine

Commissioners raised Dracaena Ravine as a priority site because steep slopes and channelized runoff have caused erosion and tree loss. Commissioner Jack Fisher asked whether rain gardens and bioswales were practical in Piedmont given the town’s slopes; John Gibbs of WRT replied they are challenging on steep grades but could be effective if placed to retain stormwater before it reaches vulnerable slopes. "I think that's mostly where we're coming from... how can we retain that storm water when it's at its peak?" Gibbs said.
Staff described recent temporary measures used at Dracaena—emergency waddles and sandbags at the top of the ridge and near the handicap ramp following heavy rains—and said longer‑term stabilization could include plantings, localized boulders or other design interventions alongside green infrastructure. Commissioners pressed for specific pilot projects and acknowledged additional design and budget work will be required before construction.
