Wheaton schools outline referendum asking for $718,000 in annual support if both questions pass

Wheaton Area Schools Superintendent Marty Lanter briefed the Traverse County Commission on an upcoming district referendum intended to stabilize the district’s operational budget. Lanter said lower enrollment, inflation and decreased state funding have strained the district; even after a $300,000 reduction to the 2026 operations budget the district projects statutory operating debt within two years without additional revenue.
Lanter said "If both questions were to pass, it would provide $718,000.00 of additional revenue annually to be used to provide future stabilization of the district’s operational budget." She warned that failure of the referendum could force deeper expenditure reductions for fiscal year 2027 and beyond and reshaping of educational programs and services. Two community informational meetings were announced for Sept. 17 at 7:00 p.m. at the Wheaton High School Auditorium and another meeting to be scheduled in early October.
