The Amelia County board held a continued budget workshop where staff walked members through a revised FY26 budget crosswalk, updated revenue estimates and a set of options to close an $830,000 shortfall.
Esther, the staff presenter, told the board she had reclassified account names and updated revenue estimates based on recent collections and department feedback. "We received that fund back in December 2024," she said when describing an updated allocation for a volunteer-fire program, and later summarized a proposed countywide employee bonus figure. After reviewing three options, board members agreed by consensus to remove the $830,000 transfer from the CIP and to exclude a proposed meals-tax increase from the advertisement and public hearing materials.
Why it matters: the board's directive narrows the ways the county will cover a projected shortfall for FY26 and requires staff to rerun totals and produce an updated legal notice for the required public hearing. Board members asked staff to present an updated advertisement that shows the recommended amounts, the previously requested amounts, and what will be advertised. The board did not take a formal vote on adoption at this meeting; members instructed staff to return updated materials for publication and public hearing scheduling.
What happens next: staff will rerun the numbers incorporating the board's direction, craft an updated advertisement/legal notice for the public hearing, and circulate the draft for review before advertising.
