Erin Smith, director of Viking Library Systems, presented the system's 2024 annual report and a 2026 budget request to the Traverse County Commission. "The Viking Library System is requesting a 1% funding increase for 2026. The amount of the request is $37,667.00," Smith told the Board. Smith said Viking supports 11 member libraries across six counties and celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2025.
Local librarians also gave updates: Jacquie Peeples reported for the Wheaton Community Library and Bernice Piechowski gave an update for the Browns Valley Library. Smith highlighted regional outreach services — including the bookmobile and services to childcare centers and group homes — and reported 9,730 items circulated through outreach in 2024. Commissioners heard the request and will consider it during the county budget process.
