County attorney briefs commissioners on cannabis manufacturing application, PFML implications

County Attorney Matt Franzese told the Board a manufacturing permit for cannabis is pending in Tara Township and that Planning and Zoning is preparing an ordinance; he also said the state's Paid Family and Medical Leave law allows elected officials to pay premiums but not to take leave under the statute, and he will provide further guidance.
County Attorney Matt Franzese updated the Traverse County Commission on legal and regulatory matters at the Sept. 2 meeting. Franzese said there is a pending application in Tara Township for the manufacturing of cannabis and that the Planning and Zoning Board is drafting a manufacturing ordinance for the Board’s review.
Franzese also discussed the state's Paid Family and Medical Leave (PFML) law and its implications for elected officials. "The PFML law doesn’t eliminate elected officials from participating in paying premiums for PFML; however, they wouldn’t be allowed to request leave for this purpose," Franzese said and added he will research the issue further and return with more information for the Board. Commissioners did not take action on either item at the meeting pending additional material from staff and the Planning and Zoning Board.
