Piedmont awards sidewalk shaving contract and approves crossing guards contract; buys replacement pickup

Public Works recommended awarding the FY 2026'27 sidewalk shaving project to Precision Concrete Cutting under a purchasing cooperative, with a contract amount of $164,796 and an overall construction budget of $181,276. Staff said the program targets offsets of two inches or less caused by street trees and noted the project is exempt from CEQA as routine maintenance.
Council also approved a one'year crossing guard services contract with All City Management Services (ACMS) for up to $165,524 in FY 2026'27; staff said the school district contributes about $60,000 annually toward crossing guard costs and the recent procurement returned improved pricing while maintaining continuity. Chief Schatz described coordination with the school district on schedules and data'driven review of crossing locations.
Finally, Public Works requested accelerating the replacement of a midsize pickup ($68,917) because the existing vehicle failed; staff discussed electric vehicle alternatives and service'part availability for discontinued electric models and recommended purchasing the replacement for reliability. Council approved all items unanimously.
"They're also a preferred vendor that is used by our insurance provider, Sedgwick," staff said of the sidewalk vendor when explaining selection and value. The council directed staff to proceed with contract execution and with planned construction and procurement steps.
