Habitat for Humanity urges county help after encampments disrupt Osage Place neighborhood

Ari Bennett, operations director for Habitat for Humanity of Monroe County, told the council that homeowners in the Osage Place neighborhood are experiencing repeated problems tied to encampments on the adjacent Thompson property and asked county officials for an update on plans to help those living there find housing. “Habitat for Humanity of Monroe County and Osage Place neighborhood homeowners continue to experience challenges with encampments in the Thompson property,” Bennett said.

Bennett listed specific complaints reported by homeowners and Habitat staff, including theft of tools and bikes, aggressive dogs running toward children, unauthorized use of water, and erosion and runoff for which the city utilities have issued notices. He said some Habitat partner families have declined lot offers because of safety concerns, and urged commissioners and councilors to describe the county’s plan for housing people in the encampments so neighbors can make housing decisions with more confidence. The public comment was part of the council’s non‑agenda public comment period; councilors thanked Bennett and noted the matter touches land use, public safety and social services.
