Piedmont's City Council unanimously adopted the city's fiscal year 2026'27 operating budget and related resolutions at its June 15 meeting.
Finance Director Karen Bawa presented the second public hearing on the budget and said revenues total $41,198,740 with expenditures of about $41,540,000. She outlined proposed transfers that include $1,000,000 to a facilities maintenance fund and $750,000 to capital improvements and said the general fund is expected to use roughly $1,000,000 from fund balance in 2026'27, leaving a projected June 2027 ending balance of $6,840,000—approximately 17% of expenditures.
"At the last meeting on June 1, a balanced budget was presented, proposed for fiscal year 26,27," Bawa said, summarizing the staff recommendations.
Council voted on six separate resolutions: adoption of operating appropriations, appropriation of other funds (special revenue and capital), updates to the city fee schedule, setting the annual appropriations (Gann) limit, levying the municipal services special tax (voter'approved in March 2024), and setting municipal sewer tax rates. Each resolution was moved, seconded and passed unanimously.
Mayor Smigiel Anderson thanked staff after the votes: "I just wanna take a moment and really appreciate our staff. Our finance director, Karen Bawa, all of our directors who are here this evening." The council also pulled item 1 (approval of prior minutes) for further review at a future meeting.
What happens next: the adopted resolutions authorize the appropriations and fee changes for FY 2026'27; any implementation steps tied to capital projects or transfers will proceed under the city's established administrative processes.
