Police Chief Dean Hayes told the Anchorage City Council on Sept. 8 that the department has filled a patrol vacancy and secured grant-funded equipment.
"I applied for an attorney general grant and the police department will receive approximately $40,000 worth of new equipment including vest upgrades, ballistic shields, and helmets," Hayes said. He also announced Officer Hans' resignation and the hiring of Tim Thomas as a replacement and reported that renovation of the police station is about 90% complete.
Mayor Neil Ramsey and council members asked routine questions about crime-prevention reporting; Chief Hayes explained that a recent spike in the crime-prevention number reflected proactive checks on vehicles parked near the Anchorage Trail to discourage leaving valuables in plain sight. The council did not take formal action on the hire or the grant during the meeting; the grant was described as "not a matching grant."
