Mount Vernon schools say 9,000 new homes could add about 3,000 students

Jack Parker, superintendent of Mt Vernon Community School Corp, said the district is tracking roughly 50 new housing developments in Vernon and Buck Creek Township that he estimates could total about 9,000 homes and bring more than 3,000 additional students.
"These 50 developments represent 9,000 homes bringing to us over 3,000 students in the coming years," Parker said, using a district map to illustrate where new rooftops are planned. He added that the figures form the basis for the district’s facility-planning models.
District leaders presented the housing counts alongside birth-rate trends and cohort data to explain why enrollment growth is expected to continue. Parker said officials consider new housing a sign of a thriving community but emphasized that the district must plan classroom space, teachers and transportation to match the projected growth.
