County Engineer Darren Moon summarized discussions with the City of Ames regarding a proposed roundabout at George Washington Carver Avenue and Cameron School Road and asked whether the county would partner on preliminary design work. Moon said annexation patterns mean about a quarter of the intersection will remain in county jurisdiction and the City proposed a 50/50 split of preliminary design costs; the county’s estimated share was $50,000.
Moon told the board a preliminary design would allow the county and city to jointly apply for safety funds with a maximum grant amount of $500,000; construction was estimated at roughly $400,000 and the City proposed a 75/25 split of construction costs. Chair Murken emphasized that "No funds are being committed" at the decision to express interest, and the board approved a motion stating the county's preferred solution is a roundabout and that it is interested in partnering on the project moving forward.
