Police Chief David Pernice told the Union City Borough Council on Aug. 27 that a new hire approved at the prior meeting has not responded to outreach and he is assuming the candidate is no longer interested. Pernice said there are 32 candidates on the consortium list and that while he would like to hire two part‑time officers, only one position was approved by council; Council agreed to search for one part‑time officer.
Pernice said he will check with the Civil Service Commission to set up oral exams and will send out letters to candidates. The staffing update was provided during the Police Chief report and no vote or formal action was recorded beyond Council's directive to continue recruitment.
