Police chief reports 269 calls since June, wins grants for tasers and cameras

Police Chief David Pernice presented the department's July report and told council that from June 1 through Aug. 13 the department handled 269 calls, "averaging about 3.63 calls per day." He listed recent incidents including pursuits, PFAs, warrants, domestics, drug activity, vandalism and suicide/mental-health calls; some calls have taken entire shifts to resolve.
Pernice said he and Officer Shelly attended an Alert Active Shooter training July 24–25 hosted by Millcreek PD and described it as "very beneficial." He also reported he applied to the Union City Community Foundation for funding for four tasers and for security cameras to cover another section of North Main Street; the UCCF awarded both requests.
What this means: The department is balancing high call volume and long incidents while pursuing grant funding and training to improve response and officer safety. No personnel schedule or deployment changes beyond the part-time hire approved by council were specified in the minutes.
