Legislature approves $676,000 acquisition for Ithaca Sage Preserve

The Tompkins County Legislature on Dec. 17 approved a resolution to use county Natural Infrastructure Capital Program funds to acquire the Town of Ithaca's Sage Preserve. Amanda Champion moved the resolution and Ann Corman seconded; the motion carried 11-2.
Town of Ithaca Supervisor Rod Howe told legislators the total purchase price is $676,000 and that the town has committed $50,000 from the Park Foundation and is awaiting a Consolidated Funding Application award that could provide additional support. "It's 676,000," Howe said when asked about the exact price.
Legislators asked whether the town would contribute and whether housing could be sited on the property. Howe said the town views the purchase as preserving green space adjacent to a planned traditional neighborhood development on South Hill, providing trails and recreation for town and county residents.
The resolution was described as an appropriation from a dedicated Natural Infrastructure fund. After discussion on funding sources and local benefits, the roll-call vote showed two dissenting votes; the motion carried 11 to 2. The administration and the town indicated they will coordinate next steps and monitor potential state grant funding that could reduce the county's net cost.
