The Town of Dorset Planning Commission on Jan. 6 approved a conditional-use permit allowing a new sawmill to operate at 4343 Route 30, the owner said.
Michael Flett, the owner and applicant, presented a management plan for the proposed wood-products operation and told the commission, "Trees to be processed will be primarily local." He said large trucks would "deliver logs approximately four times per year" and that "the mill will operate between 9AM and 5PM." Flett also said noise from the machine would be audible at the south and east sides of the property but "should not be objectionable." The commission recorded that abutting property owners were notified of the hearing.
Commissioners examined the site plan and requested clearer, more legible graphics. After reviewing applicable criteria in Figure 4-02 of the zoning bylaw, the commission found the standards satisfied. Commissioner Scott Thompson moved to approve the application; Commissioner David Berard seconded. The motion carried 7-0-0 with the condition that the site plan be revised to improve readability.
The approval permits a sawmill operation inside the existing pole barn at the Route 30 address; the commission's action was limited to the conditional-use determination and the graphic-improvement condition. The minutes record no objections from abutters and do not document additional operational restrictions beyond the applicant's stated hours and truck frequency.
The commission kept an audio/video record of the meeting at the Dorset town office.
