Union City accepts police resignation, clears background checks and approves new officer contract

Union City Borough Council on Oct. 7 accepted the resignation of part-time Officer Rick Skonieczka effective no later than Sept. 30, 2024, and approved Chief Pernice's request to proceed with background checks and to hire two part-time officers from the certified Civil Service list.
The meeting minutes also record that, after executive sessions on personnel and contracts, Council voted to approve a police contract for Zackery Shelly. The resignation motion and the background-check authorization both passed; the minutes do not provide a roll-call tally for the hiring motion.
