Legislature backs local control for TC3, approves capital funding and an added resolution of support

The Tompkins County Legislature on Oct. 15 unanimously approved a resolution backing Tompkins Cortland Community College (TC3) to maintain local control over operating decisions and later approved a related capital funding resolution.
Legislator Shawna Black, who moved the support resolution, said trustees and the college president had asked counties to act after a perceived move by the SUNY chancellor to take a larger role in some governance decisions. Black said she had "run it by President Kremenak as well as the board and they did not have any suggestions or corrections." Mike Lane and other legislators emphasized the importance of the joint governing process and the college’s long history of local oversight.
Separately, the legislature approved Resolution L authorizing 2024–25 capital improvements for TC3 and agreed to use county contingency funds to address timing differences in the college’s off-cycle budget. Members discussed Cortland County’s budgetary constraints and the desire to maintain proportional county support.
