Court backlog shrinking and tax collection rising, officials say

Committee member Dr. Johnson gave operational updates on public safety and municipal finance.
Dr. Johnson reported the municipal court backlog has decreased "from 4,438 last year to currently 2,715," and said staff are preparing the 2025 budget and calendar. She also noted that on Oct. 11 Carneys Point Fire Department was first on scene at a fire at Riverfront Limo Service. Dr. Johnson added the ramp to the Annex is completed though ground work remains.
Separately, Mr. Pelura reported the tax collection rate was 96.3% at the end of September, up from 94.33% the prior year, and reminded the Committee that the Township must cover 100% of taxes payable to county and school districts, so uncollected local dollars affect cash flow.
