Committee warns: no local shelter available for township animals beginning Jan. 1
Summary
Carneys Point officials said the township will not have a facility to receive animals picked up by its Animal Control Officer starting Jan. 1; Administrator Pine said outreach to six area shelters produced two refusals and four nonresponses and Delaware will not accept the animals.
Mayor Brown warned that the Township will lack a shelter option for animals picked up by Animal Control beginning Jan. 1.
"Starting January 1st, we will not have an animal shelter to take our animals the Animal Control Officer picks up," Mayor Brown said, and Administrator T. Pine told the Committee he had contacted six shelters: two declined and four did not return calls; Pine added Delaware would not accept the Township's animals.
During public participation resident Joe Wright asked whether wild animals such as skunks will still be handled; Mayor Brown replied the Animal Control Officer will continue to take wild animals for now. The Committee did not announce a replacement shelter or an immediate operational plan during the meeting.
