County approves a series of indigent defense and public defender contracts; finance warns of modest funding gap
Summary
The commission approved multiple indigent-defense grant agreements and public-defender contracts (26-34 through 26-40). County finance staff warned the grant plus the current budget will not cover contract increases and estimated a roughly $3,000 shortfall that will require a budget amendment in December.

County legal staff and Michael McGinnis updated the commission on indigent defense grant agreement 26-34 (Indigent Defense Commission) and a series of public-defender contracts (26-35 through 26-40) for legal assistant/grant-manager and defender services. All contracts were presented and approved by motion and voice vote.
County finance cautioned the commission that the grant agreement and the county's calendar-year budget will not fully cover contract increases; staff said, "the grant agreement, the grant agreement plus our current budget is not enough to cover the increases in these following contracts... The difference is about $3,000." The county noted that a budget increase will likely be required at the December meeting to reconcile fiscal-year timing differences.
