Sanilac County seeks MDNR grant to replace aging bridge, add trails and cabins at Lexington Park

The Sanilac County Park Commission and Board of Commissioners on Dec. 17 approved a resolution supporting the Lexington Park Accessibility Plan and a grant application to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Trust Fund.
The plan calls for replacing a 70+-year-old nonaccessible pedestrian bridge, adding a 1,100-foot walking trail, converting an antiquated tennis court to three pickleball courts, creating a dog park area and constructing two camping cabins connected to the campsite area and bathhouse. A commissioner said the project’s projected total cost is about $890,000 and engineering fees could be about $90,000; the intended grant request was described as a $400,000 MDNR Trust Fund grant. The board discussed grant uncertainty and said the county would proceed with bridge and cabin work if the grant is not awarded.
Commissioners said the park produced notable revenue this year for its size, cited occupancy and revenue figures and argued the cabins and improved access would increase revenue and public use. The board adopted the resolution by voice vote and signaled intent to move forward with grant application work.
