Smyth County backs reopening of Grindstone Campground, urges federal, state and local collaboration

The resolution, which the Board adopted unanimously, urges collaboration among federal, state and local partners, stresses the campground’s importance to local tourism and outdoor recreation, and requests that a copy be transmitted to the U.S. Forest Service and other stakeholders. Chair Pro‑Tem Rick Billings entertained the motion; Rye Valley District Supervisor Jason Parris moved to approve and Park District Supervisor Kristopher Ratliff seconded.
Board members described the reopening as beneficial to local restaurants, lodging and outdoor businesses and as supportive of community recreation opportunities. No county funds were appropriated at the March 26 meeting in relation to the resolution.
