Board proclaims April Child Abuse Prevention Month; Children's Advocacy Center reports 495 local investigative interviews since 2014

Kathy Rourke, representing the Children's Advocacy Center, thanked Smyth County agencies for their partnership and briefed the Board on the center's work with local law enforcement, the Commonwealth's Attorney's Office and social services.
"Since the beginning of our partnership with the Smyth County agencies, which was in 2014, we have provided 495 investigative interviews for the kids in this county," Rourke said. She described the center's role serving children suspected of sexual or physical abuse, severe neglect and online exploitation, and invited board members to a pinwheel-planting event to raise awareness.
County staff presented a draft resolution to proclaim April as Child Abuse Awareness Month; a supervisor moved to adopt the resolution, it was seconded, and the board approved the proclamation unanimously. Rourke said the center will display a sign and pinwheels and continue coordinating with county partners to support victims and families.
