Director of Public Safety Curtis Crawford reported that Smyth County was awarded a $100,000 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) grant from the Virginia Department of Fire Programs and recommended the County Administrator be authorized to accept the funds. The Public Safety Committee recommended acceptance and the Board recorded that recommendation.
Adwolfe Fire Chief Steve Widner asked whether the county would purchase a decontamination washer (quote near $30,000) and discussed sharing the machine with other departments. County Administrator Shawn Utt suggested splitting the cost between PSAC funds and contingency funds and agreed to add the item to the next PSAC agenda for further consideration. Chief Widner noted turnout-gear safety concerns and past grant outcomes for neighboring departments.
