District considers donated digital scoreboard; staff warns DSA upgrades could push cost to $70,000–$90,000

Presenter Alex Erdosian told the board the district is evaluating a donated digital scoreboard and the trade-offs between a full install and a smaller-panel option. "A rough estimate with DSA upgrade included would be between 70 and $90,000 for this project," Erdosian said, noting the 30-panel quote was $22,210 while a previous 60-panel estimate with installation ran about $72,230.
Erdosian said he contacted three contractors and "at this time, no 1 wants to touch this project. They wanna see engineering plans and DSA sign off." He recommended hiring an architect to prepare drawings (estimated at $19,000) so contractors could proceed; one contractor indicated they would handle programming and installation but required RTK and Division of the State Architect approvals before work could begin. Board members weighed whether to install the unit inside the gym, by the football field, or keep it in storage as a backup, with the option of returning the donation if no viable site or path forward was found.
Members raised safety and logistics concerns about making the scoreboard portable: staff warned the full assembly would be very heavy and difficult to move and emphasized that any movable structure would need to be extremely sturdy. Participants discussed placing the scoreboard beyond student access (for example, on the solar-field side of a fence) to avoid DSA-triggering proximity issues, and noted power access and visibility (including whether the unit would be visible from the nearby freeway) as constraints.
As a next step, members agreed to schedule a campus walk-through the week of July 20 to inspect potential locations and return recommendations at the August meeting. The board also discussed forming a subcommittee that new members could join after they are seated.
