Resident urges federal, county action to reopen Grindstone Campground; bids due April 24

During citizens' time, resident Joey Cook urged the board to help speed repairs and permitting so Grindstone Campground can reopen. Cook said the campground closed after a wastewater-system failure following storm damage and that contractors’ bids for repairs are due April 24, 2026, with a site visit available March 18, 2026.
Cook described the economic losses from the closure and asked the board to contact the U.S. Forest Service and Congressman Morgan Griffith’s office to keep the wastewater replacement project moving. County staff noted the campground is on National Forest land and said they would contact the Forest Service area manager, Ed Wright, for an update to share at the next meeting.
Supervisors noted the county and congressional staff have raised the issue previously and pledged coordination. Board members asked staff to bring an update from the Forest Service to the next meeting.
