Smyth County accepts $334,200 DCR grant, authorizes MOU with Mount Rogers Planning District to develop flood preparedness plan

County administration told supervisors that Smyth County was awarded $334,200 from the Department of Conservation and Recreation to develop a community flood preparedness plan after Hurricane Helene-related grant activity.
"The county was awarded $334,200 from Department of Conservation and Recreation to develop a community flood preparedness plan and basically gets us set up for future funding eligibilities for other DCR grants," the administrator said, recommending the county run the project through the Mount Rogers Planning District Commission because they have capacity and regional experience.
Supervisors asked if the plan would outline proposed actions; administration confirmed the plan will include engineering tasks, flood-elevation mapping and would be appropriate to incorporate into the county's comprehensive plan. The board unanimously authorized acceptance of the grant and execution of the MOU.
