Smyth County OKs $30,000 contract for larger Independence Day fireworks display

County administration proposed contracting a larger fireworks display for Independence Day weekend and asked supervisors to authorize signature on a $30,000 contract.
"So the contract you have in front of you is for a $30,000 display...I asked them to give us a price for or give us a contract for 30,000," the administrator said, noting last year the county spent $20,000 with additional town contributions. Supervisors asked about postponement dates and asked that the contract include detail on the display composition; administration said the parent company would coordinate with local owners and could work with the county on an alternate date if needed.
Following comments supporting the event and suggestions to publicize viewing areas, the board voted unanimously to approve the contract and authorize the administrator to sign.
