Smyth County board ratifies local emergency after ice storm to preserve reimbursement eligibility

Following a recent ice and snow event, the board ratified a formal state of emergency declaration to preserve possible state reimbursement and set the emergency to formally end on March 1; the vote was unanimous.
County administration told supervisors that the county had declared a formal state of emergency after a severe ice event and recommended the board ratify that declaration so the county could pursue potential reimbursement from the state.
"I declared the formal state of emergency following the state's declaration...within 45 days after that declaration, I have to make sure that the board ratifies it," the county administrator said. The resolution also places a 30-day time frame on the emergency and indicated it would formally be over on March 1.
After brief discussion about impacts to mail and local travel during the event, the board voted unanimously to ratify the emergency declaration.
