Residents press Sperry board over code-enforcement complaints; town seeks certified officer

At the Jan. 8 meeting, residents Bill Downs and Loren Turner urged the Board of Trustees to force removal of stock trailers and debris at a neighbor's property, saying the trailers should be moved "100 feet" from their property line and that piles of dirt and debris are a nuisance. They also requested the town clarify whether the word "dwelling" in the zoning code refers to the property line or the foundation of a home.
Chief Nick Mahoney, discussing the town's capacity to enforce codes, said that "THE TOWN NEEDS A CERTIFIED CODE ENFORCEMENT OFFICER" and that he and the town clerk receive calls daily about code issues. Mahoney said he will follow up with Kevin Watkins to ensure the stock trailers are moved at least 100 feet from the dwelling. Trustee Gary Callahan described the dispute as appearing to be a civil matter. No formal enforcement action or ordinance change was taken at the meeting.
