Sperry trustees approve police training, equipment purchases and accept $50,000 donation

The Sperry Board of Trustees on Oct. 9 approved several actions affecting the police department: Chief Nicholas Mahoneywas authorized to attend training Oct. 13through Oct. 17, 2025, at a total cost of $1,210.75 (registration $250; hotel $640.75; per diem $64/day). Trustees also approved the appointment of Thomas M. Grimsley as a reserve police officer.
The board approved purchasing six portable radios and software from Stolz Telecom for $16,227.50 after receiving a Motorola Solutions bid for five radios at $40,468.60. Trustees also approved equipment for a 2021 Dodge Charger, including lights and siren ($4,900.00), a gun mount ($751.73) and a vehicle wrap ($715.00); funds were allocated from the sale of a police truck ($3,000) and the .6% sales tax special account for the balance. The board unanimously accepted a $50,000 donation from the Cherokee Nation; the minutes state the funds will be placed in the police department savings account until the board determines how to use them.
